Observing Strategy Development

We will formalize metrics and quick-look tables to return cosmological forecasts and transient distributions for given HLTDS observing strategies. Additionally, we will create tools to enable investigation and optimization of photometric and spectroscopic SN Ia survey strategies.

Our work will account for the changing landscape of SN Ia cosmology, and will be adjusted between now and the launch of Roman. It is our goal for all members of the Roman community to fully simulate a HLTDS.

  • Design tools for community input on the observing strategy

    • A user may select a set of initial options to output a HLTDS design.

    • We will also develop software that translates a proposed observing strategy into a format that can be easily digested by the SN simulations software (SNANA) and cosmology pipelines (PIPPIN) and allow users to run fully cataloged simulations.

  • Build observing strategy quick assessment capabilities

    • We will help the community understand the dependencies of of FoM on the observing metrics as wee leverage results from the cosmology pipeline run on the simulations.

    • This capability will build from an initial smaller range of observing options to add requested options and systematics based on community input.
